HOCKEY TOWN GETS THE CUP
The
were the favorite all year long and they proved why. The Detroit Red
Wings won the Stanley Cup with a Game 5 victory over the Carolina
Hurricanes 3-1. Scotty Bowman won his record 9th title while future
hall of famers, Dominik Hasek and Luc Robitaille won their first.
Defenseman Nicklas Lidstrom won the Conn Smythe Trophy as the most
valuable player in the playoffs, the first European to win it, just as
Hasek is the first European goalie to lead his team to the Cup. The only
other non-Canadian to win this trophy was American Brian Leetch with the
1994 NY Rangers.
